East Ridge senior quarterback and Gophers basketball recruit Cedric Tomes will miss Friday’s football game against Hopkins and be sidelined up to eight weeks with a broken finger.
Currently in a cast, Tomes is expected to have surgery Thursday on his left index finger and non-shooting hand.
The 6-1 dual-threat signal caller suffered the fracture four plays into last Thursday’s 41-0 opening loss at Minnetonka.
“It’s not too long of a recovery, so I’m excited to get that going,” Tomes said. “I was taking an outside zone and running the ball. A helmet hit my finger. I got up and didn’t really feel the pain at first, but I looked down and my finger was sideways.”
The Raptors’ two-sport standout committed in May to join new Gophers men’s basketball coach Niko Medved’s 2026 recruiting class, which also includes his D-I Minnesota AAU teammate and Wayzata wing Nolen Anderson.
Last season, Tomes threw for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for 558 yards and 10 touchdowns for the 5-4 Raptors.
“There’s really no set timetable,” Tomes said. “It could be less or it could be more.”
Tomes was credited for two carries for 1 yard in his season debut Thursday before suffering the injury. He was replaced at QB by junior wide receiver Leo Stalsberg, who completed 5 of 10 passes for 32 yards.
“I’m still around for the guys and still a captain,” Tomes said. “It will still hopefully be a fun season to see where they can go until I get back.”
As a junior guard, Tomes averaged 27 points for East Ridge while being named to the Star Tribune All-Minnesota boys basketball team, which included Hopkins guard Jayden Moore.
Friday’s football matchup between East Ridge and Hopkins would have featured two of Minnesota’s best two-sports athletes in Tomes and Moore. Moore, also a senior, is coming off a 200-yard performance for Hopkins in a 49-21 loss to Edina. Moore’s younger brother, Tre, threw three touchdown passes as a sophomore quarterback.

“Hopkins is obviously a good team,” Tomes said. “But I think with how our guys have been practicing and working it’s looking good for us to bounce back.”
