Former DeLaSalle defensive lineman Derreck Robinson, a 2000 graduate who played football at Iowa from 2000 to 2004, died Wednesday at his home in San Diego.
He was 43. His cause of death has not been released.
Robinson, who went on to play in the NFL with stints with the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys before retiring in 2011, returned to the Twin Cities often to take part in nonprofit events and camps for underprivileged youth.
On the football field, Robinson was a force for DeLaSalle’s 1999 Class 3A state championship team, which beat St. Michael-Albertville 28-7 in the Prep Bowl. He was also a member of DeLaSalle’s 1999 Class 2A boys basketball state champion and was named to the Star Tribune’s All-Metro team in 1999.
Robinson is a member of the DeLaSalle Hall of Fame.
“We are saddened to hear about Derreck’s passing,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “Derreck had a big, beautiful personality that inspired those around him. As a player, he persevered through ups and downs and was an important leader on our 2004 championship team. He had a solid career in the NFL and made a great impact on those around him after football in California.
“We were excited to have him back as an honorary captain for our win over Michigan in 2016. His legacy continues to inspire our players today.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Derreck’s family, former teammates and many friends across the country.”
