Minnesota high school hockey will lose some of its best under-17 players next fall. The U.S. National Team Development Program announced April 3 that seven Minnesotans, including Moorhead’s Joey Cullen, will join the under-17 roster for the 2026-27 hockey season.

The players hail from everywhere from Minnetonka to Moorhead and will relocate to Plymouth, Mich., for the elite hockey program. The full roster of 23 will compete in the United States Hockey League and in three international tournaments.

Meet the Minnesotans headed to the NTDP, listed in alphabetical order:

Age: 15

Alexandria-born Buttweiler logged 56 goals and 85 assists in 77 games for the Honeybaked under-15 AAA team this season. Last year, he joined Joey Cullen on Moorhead’s Bantam AA roster with 107 points.

Cullen will be missed on Moorhead’s roster after scoring 40 points, including a third-period goal in the boys hockey state tournament title game, during the 2025-26 season. The sophomore forward is no stranger to a state tourney trophy and led the Moorhead Bantam AA team to championship glory with 151 points during the 2024-25 season. The son of former NHL player Matt Cullen is expected to be a top prospect in the 2028 NHL draft.
