How the Minnesota Top 25 fared on opening week in high school football
Two of the top 10 teams, Wayzata and Mankato West, endured upset losses in Week 1.

1. Maple Grove: The Crimson pulled away from host Stillwater in a 37-17 victory. James Engle Jr. carried 24 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns.
2. Minnetonka: Caleb Francois rushed for 178 yards in a 41-0 win over East Ridge.
3. Shakopee: The Sabers’ highly touted defense posted a 41-0 shutout at Eagan.
4. Edina: Mason West passed for 207 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-21 win at Hopkins. Chase Bjorgaard rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
5. Forest Lake: Mack Jurkovich rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown in the Rangers’ 21-18 victory over Prior Lake at Forest Lake.
6. Moorhead: The Spuds put up a 29-point third quarter in a 48-10 victory over Rogers and produced 346 yards of total offense.
7. Elk River (5A): A touchdown with 3:48 left gave the Elks a 50-42 victory over Bemidji at Bemidji State. Elk River rushed for 499 yards, getting 172 from Braedon Becker and 159 from Carsyn Kleffman.
8. Chanhassen (5A): Michael McDowell kicked a 29-yard field goal with 2.6 seconds left for a 24-22 home victory over Alexandria.
9. Wayzata: Thor Soukup passed for two TDs and ran for one, but Andover won 44-20 at Wayzata.
10. Mankato West (5A): A rally fell short, and West lost 21-19 at Mahtomedi. Osborne Lorenz’s two fourth-quarter touchdown passes made it close.
11. Andover: Quarterback Joseph Mapson rushed for 273 yards and five touchdowns in a 44-20 victory at Wayzata.

17. Orono (4A): Senior quarterback Griffin Mauer made his first career start for Orono, rushing for a touchdown and throwing for one in a 21-0 victory over Becker.
18. Mankato East (5A): The Cougars pulled off a 28-7 victory over Owatonna.
19. Stillwater: The Ponies trailed No. 1 Maple Grove by only a touchdown early in the fourth quarter before slipping to a 37-17 loss.
20. St. Thomas Academy (5A): For the fifth year in a row, the Cadets defeated Cretin-Derham Hall, pulling away in the third quarter and winning 27-14.
21. Eagan: The Wildcats, trying to build on their success of last season, instead got rolled 41-0 by Shakopee.
22. Jackson County Central (2A): The only Class 2A team on this list cruised 61-25 over Maple River.
23. Rocori (4A): QB Max Fredin went 31-for-46 for 273 passing yards in a 28-7 victory at Totino-Grace.
24. Cretin-Derham Hall (5A): St. Thomas Academy senior running back Dominic Baez made it tough on the Raiders in a 27-14 Cadets victory.
25. Hermantown (4A): The Hawks rolled 52-7 over Duluth Denfeld.
