Minnesota Top 25: The Star Tribune’s statewide football rankings

Can anyone get in the way of a Maple Grove-Minnetonka showdown — that’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 — on Oct. 15?

Maple Grove and Minnetonka remain atop Strib Varsity’s Top 25 football ranking. Edina and Moorhead slid, and Chaska, Robbinsdale Armstrong, Pine Island and Farmington entered.

1. Maple Grove (3-0)

The defending Class 6A champs are hitting their stride.

2. Minnetonka (3-0)

Quarterback Caden Gutzmer was throwing dimes, completing 16 of 19 passes for 263 yards.

The talented Spuds had to play without their ringleader, QB Jett Feeney.

South won a throwback, ground-and-pound game that included just 52 total passing yards.

The Eagles picked off Edina quarterback Mason West three times.

East took its first regular-season victory over West since 2005.

13. St. Thomas Academy (5A, 3-0)

The Cadets were relentless and dominating against Burnsville.

14. Byron (4A, 3-0)

Behind 288 yards from RB Carson Heimer, the Bears started fast and never gave Hill-Murray hope.

15. Andover (2-1)

A pair of defensive touchdowns spurred a 48-point first half for the Huskies.

The Vikings’ winning streak is up to 36 games.

23. Annandale (3A, 3-0)

Things are about to get much tougher for the Cardinals with back-to-back games against Watertown-Mayer and Holy Family.

24. Pine Island (3A, 3-0)

Three games, three shutouts for the Panthers.

25. Farmington (3-0)

The Tigers used a throwback single wing to pile up more than 300 yards rushing.
