Minnesota Top 25: The Star Tribune’s statewide football ranking

Strib Varsity

Strib Varsity’s Jim Paulsen didn’t see anything to change his mind in a big way, and he doesn’t see much that separates the first four teams.

Maple Grove running back James Engle Jr. celebrates one of his two touchdowns Thursday, when he rushed for 124 yards in a victory over Stillwater. Maple Grove remains No. 1 in the Minnesota Top 25. (Carlos Gonzalez/The Minnesota Star Tribune)

The Minnesota Star Tribune

The Minnesota Top 25 underwent no seismic changes after Week 1 of high school football. No major upsets or surprises made that necessary.

I have a feeling we’ll see a little more movement after Week 2.

The Minnesota Top 25

1. Maple Grove (1-0)

Previous rank: 1. Last: def. Stillwater 37-17

How’s this for depth? Down two running backs from a year ago, the Crimson unleashed senior RB James Engle Jr. for 124 yards and two TDs.

2. Minnetonka (1-0)

Previous 2. Last: def. East Ridge 41-0

The 2024 Class 6A runners-up started their 2025 redemption tour with gusto.

5. Forest Lake (1-0)

Previous: 5. Last: def. Prior Lake 21-18

After falling to Prior Lake in each of their past two openers, the Rangers pulled out a victory this time.

6. Moorhead (1-0)

Previous: 6. Last: def. Rogers 48-10

Rogers hung tough early, trailing by just three at halftime. Moorhead found its groove in the second quarter, scoring 35 unanswered in a 48-10 victory.

7. Andover (1-0)

Previous: 11. Last: def. Wayzata 44-20

QB Joseph Mapson was even better than advertised, running for 216 yards in the Huskies’ Class 6A debut.

8. Eden Prairie (1-0)

Previous: 12. Last: def. Anoka 49-21

With a 35-point first-half onslaught, this was a statement game for the Eagles and their retooled coaching staff.

9. Lakeville South (1-0)

Previous: NR. Last: def. Mounds View 34-7

Nic Swanson ran for 251 yards in the opener, topping his entire 2024 total

10. Elk River (5A, 1-0)

Previous: 7. Last: def. Bemidji 50-42.

Only Elk River can run for 499 yards, win on a touchdown in the final minutes and consider it just another day at the office.

11. Chanhassen (5A, 1-0)

Previous: 8. Last: def. Alexandria 24-22

The Storm fell behind 22-21 with 46 seconds left but drove 53 yards and got a game-winning field goal from Michael McDowell at the gun.

12. Blaine (1-0)

Previous: 15. Last: def. Lakeville North 21-14

The Bengals survived a slugfest, winning on a fourth-quarter touchdown

13. Champlin Park (1-0)

Previous: NR. Last def. St. Michael-Albertville 21-12

Preston Nelson’s 74-yard gallop late in the fourth quarter sealed the victory for the Rebels.

14. Orono (4A,1-0)

Previous: 17. Last: def. Becker 21-0

The Spartans’ fast and attacking defense could carry them a long way.

15. Centennial (1-0)

Previous: NR. Last: def. Rosemount 21-14

A classic Centennial victory: Not a thing of beauty, but I’ll always take the Cougars in a brawl.

16. Mankato East (5A, 1-0)

Previous: 18. Last: def. Owatonna 28-7

Big plays on both sides of the ball and a pair of 100-yard rushers in Blake Kamphoff and Logan Kleist boosted the Cougars.

17. St. Thomas Academy (5A, 1-0)

Previous: 20. Last: def. Cretin-Derham Hall 27-14

The Cadets physically controlled the Raiders despite losing the total yardage battle 236-188.

18. Prior Lake (0-1)

Previous: 14. Last: lost to Forest Lake 21-18

The Lakers couldn’t do much to stop the Forest Lake rushing attack.

19. Stillwater (0-1)

Previous: 19. Last: lost to Maple Grove 37-17

Sophomore QB Jack Runk, son former Metro Player of the Year Aaron Runk, passed for two TDs.

20. Rocori (4A, 1-0)

Previous: 23. Last: def. Totino-Grace 28-7

New head coach Greg Enz opened up the passing game with QB Max Fredin, who threw for 273 yards.

21. Mahtomedi (5A, 1-0)

Previous: NR. Last: def. Mankato West 21-19.

The Zephyrs’ halftime lead dwindled to two points until QB Mark Graff scored from a yard out in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

22. Jackson County Central (2A, 1-0)

Previous: 22. Last: def. Maple River 61-25.

Quarterback Roman Voss had 295 total yards — 169 rushing, 126 passing — and RB Tate Phillips had a 94-yard scoring run.

23. Mankato West (5A, 0-1)

Previous: 10. Last: lost to Mahtomedi 21-19.

Junior QB Osborne Lorenz stood out in his first start, passing for 337 yards and three TDs

24. Hermantown (4A, 1-0)

Previous: 24. Last: def. Duluth Denfeld 52-7.

How good is RB Martin Sleen? Eleven rushes, 163 yards, three TDs. Barely broke a sweat.

25. Minneota (1A, 1-0)

Previous: NR. Last: def. Minnesota Valley Lutheran 42-7.

In this case, class size doesn’t matter. A 34-game winning streak does.
