As temperatures dipped below minus-10 degrees on Friday night, Jan. 23, one place Minnesotans found warmth was in a basketball gym.

That was evident when I walked into Lakeville North High School to see a packed crowd for the girls basketball rivalry game against Lakeville South.

Lakeville North won when the teams met earlier in the season at Lakeville South, and I got the sense early in this game that South was desperate for revenge.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and held onto it the entire game for a wire-to-wire 63-56 win.

Leading them in scoring was a freshman, Macie Henrikson, who finished with 17 points — including a Euro-step layup with 90 seconds left to put South up seven points.

My big takeaway from this night: This rivalry is going to be especially great the next few years. The underclassman talent on display was remarkable on both sides.

Lakeville North sophomore Sahara Wilson has already been recognized as a four-star recruit nationally by ESPN, and she finished with 13 points on some dominant inside scoring possessions.

North’s leading scorer on the season is sophomore guard Lauren Robison, who had a game-high 19 points. Starting in the backcourt alongside her is Nivaya Koles, a freshman who scored 11 points in this one.
