Minnesota Top 25: The Star Tribune’s statewide girls volleyball ranking

Several of the state’s top girls volleyball teams carried lengthy win streaks into the postseason this week.

Minnewaska at 25 straight victories and Maple Grove at 21 have the longest active winning streaks in the state.

Those teams figured out how to be consistent at the right time, but the road only gets tougher the closer every team gets to the state tournament.

Here are the statewide rankings to start postseason:

Minnesota Top 25

1. Marshall (28-2) Previous rank: 1

The Tigers opened Class 3A, Section 2 playoffs with a sweep of New Ulm and face Mankato West in the semifinals.

2. Maple Grove (26-3) Previous rank: 2

The Crimson had a streak of 22 consecutive wins entering Thursday’s Class 4A, Section 5 quarterfinal match against Osseo.

3. Eagan (24-4) Previous rank: 3

The Wildcats take an 11-match win streak into their Class 4A, Section 3 semifinal against Rosemount on Saturday.

4. Lakeville South (26-3) Previous rank: 4

The Cougars won 21 of their last 22 matches entering Wednesday’s Class 4A, Section 1 semifinal vs. Farmington.

5. Delano (28-2) Previous rank: 5

The Tigers have won 24 of their past 25 matches, including a sweep against Richfield in the Class 3A, Section 6 quarterfinals Wednesday.

6. Chanhassen (23-4) Previous rank: 6

The Storm earned a No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, Section 2 playoffs, automatically advancing them to Tuesday’s semifinals.

7. Stewartville (24-4) Previous rank: 7

The Tigers opened the playoffs by sweeping Faribault in the Class 3A, Section 1 quarterfinals Wednesday.

8. East Ridge (20-7) Previous rank: 8

The Raptors have Lauren Bunge back healthy and have a No. 1 seed in the Class 4A, Section 3 playoffs.

9. Hawley (26-2) Previous rank: 9

The Nuggets, the No. 1 team in Class 2A, saw their 14-match win streak end in the regular-season finale vs. Minnewaska.

10. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (24-5) Previous rank: 10

The Red Knights will have their season on the line Friday against Holy Angels in the Class 3A, Section 6 semifinals.

11. Cretin-Derham Hall (20-4) Previous rank: 11

The Raiders face Minneapolis Roosevelt in the Class 3A, Section 3 semifinals Friday.

12. Centennial (19-8) Previous rank: 13

The Cougars took a four-game win streak into Thursday’s Class 4A, Section 7 match against Coon Rapids at home.

13. Champlin Park (21-8) Previous rank: 12

The Rebels play Spring Lake Park at home Thursday in a 4 vs. 5 seed quarterfinal matchup in Class 4A, Section 5.

14. Sauk-Rapids Rice (22-2) Previous rank: 14

The Storm had a four-match win streak entering Thursday’s Class 3A, Section 8 quarterfinal against Little Falls at home.

15. Lakeville North (20-8) Previous rank: 15

The Panthers stopped a late-season slide with a win vs. Rochester Mayo in the Class 4A, Section 1 quarterfinals this week.

16. Rogers (22-7) Previous rank: 16

The Royals dropped three of their previous four matches entering Thursday’s Class 4A, Section 5 matchup against Armstrong.

17. Stillwater (18-11) Previous rank: 17

The Ponies opened Class 4A, Section 4 playoffs with a sweep of North St. Paul at home to advance to the semifinals against Tartan.

18. Prior Lake (18-10) Previous rank: 18

The Lakers host Shakopee in the Class 4A, Section 2 quarterfinals on Thursday.

19. Minneota (24-6) Previous rank: 19

The Vikings take a three-match win streak into Friday’s Class 1A, Section 3 matchup against Yellow Medicine East.

20. Minnetonka (21-7) Previous rank: 21

The Skippers take an 11-match win streak into Thursday’s Class 4A, Section 2 quarterfinal vs. Eden Prairie.

21. Mayer Lutheran (21-7) Previous rank: 20

The Crusaders had a six-match win streak end last week vs. Stewartville, but they enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in Class 1A, Section 4.

22. Albany (24-3) Previous: 22

The Huskies have won 14 in a row entering Friday’s Class 2A, Section 6 quarterfinals vs. Milaca.

23. Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (23-5) Previous rank: 23

The Knights, No. 3 in Class 1A, play Red Rock Central on Friday in the section quarterfinals.

24. Chatfield (21-7) Previous rank: 24

The Gophers play Thursday in the Class 2A, Section 1 playoff opening round as a No. 2 seed vs. Blooming Prairie.

25. Minnewaska (25-0) Previous rank: unranked

The Lakers carry the longest active winning streak in the state going into Friday’s Class 2A section opener vs. St. Cloud Cathedral.
