The Minnesota Star Tribune

Thousands of alarm clocks went off all over Minnesota on Monday. Student-athletes rushed to their first official practices of the new school year.

Our launch timer went off, too, on Monday at the Minnesota Star Tribune. We released into the wild what we hope becomes your favorite destination for all things Minnesota high school sports.

Welcome to Strib Varsity.

Strib Varsity is the Star Tribune’s high school sports journalism, all the MN Hubs content and stats for 15 sports, livestreaming games and video and new features for every high school in Minnesota, all under one new brand, all in one place: stribvarsity.com. And today is Day 1, a day we’ve been scripting for a year. Well, longer than that, actually.

The Minnesota Star Tribune has prioritized high school sports since before today’s high schoolers were born. I used to hustle to our school library to read the Star Tribune’s coverage, and that was 30-plus years ago. This commitment led us to launching the popular MN Hubs websites 15 years ago, and we’ve held firm on gathering and publishing scores and stats and team information for every high school in the state.

In recent years, we’ve invested in our journalism, offering more stories of high school athletes and teams and those who support them, in part because our audience metrics told us how important these stories were to readers. This past spring, we began streaming more games live on our website, and we launched partnerships with other entities covering high school sports in Minnesota.

Now comes our biggest move yet: Strib Varsity. The destination for all of it. Stories and streams. Stats and scores. Photos and video. Rankings and polls and All-Minnesota Teams and more.

And while Strib Varsity is a division of the Minnesota Star Tribune, we’re thinking of ourselves as a new small business. A start-up. Like any start-up, we’ll need to generate new customers and new business. The great news for Star Tribune subscribers: Strib Varsity is yours to explore. Have at it. One Star Tribune subscription unlocks everything on startribune.com and stribvarsity.com. For those who haven’t yet signed up for the Strib: There’s never been a better time.

In the days ahead, we want you to find your way to Strib Varsity often. If you don’t start your daily reading there, we want you to end up there, looking for a score, or a story, or a video published by our new video reporter. Looking for a game to watch, best-in-class photography to scan, rosters to review. Looking to soak up some vibrant storytelling. Looking to watch Randy Shaver rip through a rundown of football highlights in real time in real time.

We believe we can be the convener of all interested parties and interesting things in and surrounding high school sports in our state. Yes, the whole state. Yes, for 500 high schools. Yes, for 200,000-plus student-athletes and their families and fans.

For your community, your team, your kid.

That’s why we are doing this. That’s why today is Day 1 for Strib Varsity.

Game on.
