Final: Champlin Park 28, Andover 24

Champlin Park leaned on its size advantage, running the ball straight at the Andover defense, then occasionally taking to the air for big plays, to rally from a 14-point deficit and defeat Andover. The Huskies had a chance to pull it out with a long completion in the game’s final seconds, putting them at the Champlin Park 19, but Joseph Mapson’s final pass was intercepted at the goal line.

Andover quarterback Joseph Mapson showed why Huskies coach Tom Develice called him “special” before the game. Always one of my favorite parts of the high school football game experience: bringing the youngsters out on the field. It’s a big deal for them. And they’re always so excited. Parents, too!

Big 6A battle tonight as defending champs Maple Grove host Eden Prairie

Pregame: Lakeville South at Shakopee

I’m here at Shakopee to see the Sabers take on Lakeville South, a matchup of teams with similar styles and strengths. Both rely heavily on running the ball and stopping the run. That’s no secret. The team with the slight edge in either phase of the game is likely to finish on top after a physical battle up front.

The Sabers, who were Class 6A semifinalists last year, enter their home opener having posted a 41-0 shutout last week at Eagan. After falling in the second round at state in 2024, the Cougars opened with a 34-7 win vs. Mounds View. They’d love to add to that early statement.

Pregame: Champlin Park at Andover

Here’s an interesting tidbit: Despite both teams being intradistrict rivals, tonight’s matchup will be the first time they’ve faced each other on the football field since 2016. Champlin Park won that time, 41-16. The reason for the lack of recent history between the teams can be blamed on the switch to district scheduling. Until this year, Andover was a Class 5A team, Champlin Park Class 6A. Andover bumped up to 6A this season, and the Huskies showed they were ready to join the big boys with a 44-20 drubbing of Wayzata.

Andover coach Tom Develice said his quarterback, Joseph Mapson, was clearly the star of the game, running for five touchdowns and passing for another, but he thinks Mapson could be even better tonight. Develice felt Mapson showed some first-game jitters. He expects Champlin Park to do everything possible to take away the read-option and speed-option from Mapson.

“They’re always big and they’ll take those away,” Develice said. “We’ll have to do some things differently.” He acknowledged that no matter what the defense brings, Mapson has the skills to overcome whatever they throw at him.
