Lakeville North replaces rival Lakeville South at No. 1 in Class 4A; Marshall (3A), Hawley (2A) and Minneota (1A) hold steady in the coaches poll released Sept. 7.

Eagan, boosted by transfer Mesa Jameson, is on the rise in the list compiled weekly by Strib Varsity’s Marcus Fuller. Lakeville South and Lakeville North hold the top two spots.

Lakeville South (Class 4A), Marshall (3A), Hawley (2A) and Minneota (1A), No. 1 in the preseason, retained the top spots in the rankings released by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association on Aug. 31.

The list runs 16 players deep and includes athletes committed to the nation’s top programs, including two who plan to play for the Gophers.

The preseason ranking starts with the defending Class 4A champion, moves to a rival from its own school district and then hits the rest of the state.

A tour through the 25 teams that made the list reveals plenty about the state tournaments that begin Wednesday.

Quarterfinal play begins Wednesday in four classes and plays down to championship games Saturday at Target Field.

Delano’s Max Iversen (North Dakota State) became the eighth in his class to receive a Division I offer and the third to commit after AAU teammates Cedric Tomes (Gophers) and Christian Wiggins (Iowa State).

Quietly, Bloomington Jefferson, with standouts at pitcher in Brooke Borwege, at catcher in Remi Rudquist and in the outfield in Olivia Oerther, has risen to No. 4.
